Stormflower Vineyard

Chardonnay 2016

Chardonnay 2016
Museum Release

Original tasting notes: Aromas of lemon curd, pear and citrus oils are supported by notes of brioche and nutmeal and light charry notes from the subtle French oak. The palate is restrained but still has good texture and weight of flavour. The generous mid palate is offset by a mineral acidity that makes the wine finish clean and supports the length of flavours. This is a restrained and characterful wine that will age beautifully for up to 10 years.

Museum tasting notes: A vibrant nose with sweet oak characteristics. Palate is gentle and clean, with mature creamy oatmeal notes and sweet citrus. An interesting finish with some oak char characteristics.

Vineyard Notes
Low Winter rainfall and a warm Spring provided a good start to the season. A few Spring storms damaged some of the early growth, but this is the norm in this region. Vine growth was generally strong, and the vines healthy with a moderate crop. A very unusual rain event in mid January, provided 75 – 100 mm of rain over 2 days. The balance of the season was long and mild. As it turned out, the rainfall in the middle of the driest part of the year was a boon to most vines, giving them a mid-season boost. The quality of the whites was exceptional, in particular the Chardonnay in terms of both yield and quality. While the extended exposure of the berries to elements of weather, pests and disease caused yields to suffer, the protracted maturation resulted in wines with remarkable intensity of flavour, and retention of good acid levels.
