Our Winemaking Philosophy

At Stormflower, we aim to craft wines that are a unique expression of our vineyard site, rather than simply following regional trends. While our wines can be enjoyed on their own, they are primarily designed to complement food, with structure and texture taking centre stage. This philosophy produces wines with excellent palate weight, smooth, textured mouthfeel, vibrant fruit flavours and aromas, and a clean, dry finish. Each wine is approachable on release but also has the potential to age gracefully in the cellar.

The health of our vineyard directly informs the character and quality of our wines, allowing us to champion organic and natural winemaking. We let the fruit speak for itself, with each vintage guided by the story of the vineyard that year – reflecting the biodiversity of the soil, the care taken in the vines and the weather conditions that shape ripening. This is why every Stormflower vintage is unique, a true reflection of its season.

Our single-vineyard philosophy and organic status mean all our wines are made exclusively from fruit grown on the property. Maximum annual production is approximately 4,200 dozen bottles, with an average of around 3,500 dozen. This limited fruit supply ensures we do not create tiers of wine; every bottle represents the very best expression of the fruit we have.

The Stormflower Winery

Prior to the 2020 vintage, Stormflower wines were crafted offsite by contract winemakers. With our winery completed in time for the 2020 vintage, all winemaking now takes place onsite, giving us full control over production and the flexibility to respond to the vineyard’s seasonal conditions. Our onsite facility also enables small-batch experimentation. In 2020, we produced Pétillant Naturel, Rosé, varietal Semillon and a 'Single Barrel' Chardonnay for the first time, followed by small-batch Chenin Blanc and Field White in subsequent years.

Bringing vineyard management and winemaking in-house – and reducing the travel time from vine to winery to just minutes – has already had a noticeable impact on our wines.

Our full-time winemaker and viticulturist, Joel Page, joined Stormflower in July 2019. Joel brings experience from Redgate Wines, Fraser Gallop and Leeuwin Estate, ensuring every wine reflects both the vineyard’s potential and Stormflower’s vision.
